Case study

Multi-country means multi-everything.

Context

When an organisation operates across several countries, the same business concept rarely arrives in the same shape twice. Systems differ by market, data is captured to local conventions, update frequencies vary, and the definition of a “customer” or an “event” has usually drifted between them.

This platform was built to monitor and track large enterprise customers across multiple countries, and to make that distributed information usable centrally.

The engineering problem

  • Reconciling definitions. Before anything can be monitored centrally, the business has to agree what is being counted. Most of the early work in a platform like this is modelling, not code.
  • Heterogeneous sources. Different markets bring different systems, formats and reliability. The ingestion layer has to tolerate that without silently dropping or distorting data.
  • Timeliness versus load. Monitoring implies freshness, but source systems have limits. Refresh strategy is a design decision made per data type, not once for the whole platform.
  • Trust. A central platform is only used if its numbers survive comparison with what each local team already believes. Reconciliation is part of the build.
  • Operational visibility of the platform itself. When a feed from one market stops, that has to be visible immediately - an empty chart must never look like a quiet week.

What this kind of platform enables

Once distributed information is consistent and current, it can support central oversight, comparison between markets, and earlier detection of changes that would otherwise surface weeks later in a reporting cycle.

Operating across several markets or systems?

If the same question gets a different answer in each country or system, there is usually a data layer worth building.
