What we use

One measurement tool and nothing else. This website:

  • uses Google Analytics 4, and only after you accept it, to understand how many people visit, which pages they read and roughly where they come from;
  • loads no advertising pixels, no tag manager container, no social media widgets, no embedded media and no third-party fonts;
  • does not use cookies for advertising, retargeting or profiling;
  • stores one thing in your browser's local storage: the answer you give to the cookie banner, so you are not asked again. It is not a cookie and is never sent to a server.

We look at this data in aggregate, to see which topics are worth writing about and whether the site is doing its job. We do not use it to identify individual visitors.

The cookies this site sets

If you accept, Google Analytics sets the following first-party cookies on this domain. If you decline, or simply ignore the banner, neither is ever set:

_ga
Distinguishes one browser from another so repeat visits are not counted as new visitors. Expires 2 years after it is last set.
_ga_<ID>
Holds the session state for this specific Analytics property. Expires 2 years after it is last set.

Both are set by the Google Analytics script running on this site, they contain a randomly generated identifier rather than anything you have told us, and they are not shared with advertising products.

What Google Analytics collects

In addition to the cookie identifier, the Analytics script reports the pages you view and when, the referring website or search engine, approximate location derived from your IP address, and technical details such as device type, browser, operating system and screen size.

Google Analytics 4 does not log or store the full IP address: it is used to derive approximate location and is then discarded.

Advertising is switched off at the tag itself, not merely left unconfigured. Every page loads the tag with Google Consent Mode defaults that deny ad_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization, with ads data redaction on and Google Signals disabled. The practical effect is that the tag makes no request to Google's advertising endpoints at all: no remarketing audience pixel, no DoubleClick call. Only the analytics measurement request is sent.

Analytics cookies are not necessary for this site to function, so we ask before setting them. Nothing analytical happens until you say yes.

In technical terms, every page loads the Google tag with Consent Mode defaults in which analytics_storage, ad_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization are all set to denied. The banner grants only analytics_storage, and only when you choose Accept. The advertising categories stay denied permanently, whatever you choose, because this site has no advertising purpose for your data.

Your answer is stored in your browser's local storage under the key pd-consent. We chose that over a cookie deliberately: recording your refusal of cookies by setting a cookie would be a poor answer to the question.

You can change your mind at any time:

That reopens the banner. If it does not appear, JavaScript is disabled in your browser - in which case no analytics cookie was ever set in the first place.

Refusing or removing cookies

Besides the control above, you can block or delete these cookies at any time in your browser settings, and blocking them will not affect anything on this site - no feature here depends on them. Clearing your site data also clears the stored answer, so you will be asked again on your next visit.

You can also install Google's browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics, which applies across every site that uses it.

What still happens without cookies

Loading any website involves a request to a server. Our hosting provider records standard technical information - IP address, timestamp, requested URL, user agent - for security and operational purposes. This is described in our privacy notice. It does not involve cookies and is not used to profile visitors.

If you submit the contact form, the information you enter is sent to our server and delivered to us by email. Nothing is stored in your browser as a result.
